When it comes to college, affordability can be a hurdle, to say the least. For some, it’s an outright barrier. But there are strategies families can follow that can help. Steve Klinksy, founder and CEO of Modern States Education Alliance, joins us to discuss what families can do to address affordability.
How about a “Freshman Year for Free”? Modern States Education Alliance now makes that possible. Students can take certified courses from approved and recognized university professors, sit for CLEP, a nationwide end-of-course exam, and earn enough credits to start their sophomore years without having paid a dime.

In 2012, at the height of the MOOC craze, Klinsky, a venture capitalist and philanthropist, decided the nation needed a new, innovation-focused accreditor that would recognize specific courses for credit. So he joined forces with a former ED official, David A. Bergeron, then at the Center for American Progress, and set about creating one.
