ABOUT THIS COURSE

English Literature surveys prose, poetry, and drama from British and postcolonial authors, spanning from Beowulf to the present. The course emphasizes familiarity with major authors, works, literary periods, and forms, as well as knowledge of common literary terms and themes.

This is a free, self-paced Modern States course with no prerequisites. It is aligned to the CLEP® English Literature exam and is designed to prepare you to succeed on the test and earn college credit at no cost.

Modern States originally developed this course in collaboration with Professor Erika DiGirolamo. Miriam Chirico, Ph.D. of Eastern Connecticut State University supported course enhancements published in 2025.
