Over $59 Million in College Savings! Modern States’ 2025 Highlights
Modern States turned 8 years old in August. We like to think – and our 2025 highlights reinforce – that we’re getting better with age. Tens of thousands of learners and educators are able to pursue their college dreams and their college degree while managing the debt that is too often a feature of higher education in America.
In 2025 alone, more than 145,000 learners – high schoolers, college students, and adults of all ages – registered for Modern States and saved an estimated $59 million in tuition and related college costs! It has been our most successful year ever.
Here’s a snapshot of what we accomplished together in 2025:
- More learners: Learner registrations increased 12% over 2024, signaling the rising demand for free, flexible pathways to college credit.
- More course completions: April and November marked our busiest months, with approximately 8,000 and 5,500 voucher requests respectively, contributing to a 21% year-over-year increase.
- More credit earned: Learners passed 31% more CLEP exams than in 2024. Our CLEP exam pass rate improved by five percentage points, so we’re supporting more learners, and learners are being more successful.
- More vouchers, faster: We launched automated voucher processing in 2025, and 94.7% of vouchers were automatically processed within seconds, helping learners move quickly from studying to testing.
- More course improvements: We partnered with D2L and subject matter experts to launch enhanced versions of 31 courses with a focus on improving learner experience.
- More innovation: At JPMorgan Chase’s Code for Good Hackathon, 50 students built eight prototypes of our CLEP Acceptance Tool in just 16 hours. Their projects introduced AI integration, enhanced backend functionality, and advanced filtering features, that we’re adapting soon!
- More recognition: Students in 34 of the College Board’s top 50 CLEP high schools use Modern States. More and more, educators are seeing Modern States for what it is: an exceptional free tool that helps them do the job of preparing students for college-level examinations. As an organization, we also received the D2L Excellence Award and the Brandon Hall Excellence Award.
- More secured support: We received millions of dollars in new funding commitments from six leading foundations, strengthening our ability to scale access nationwide. Stay tuned for more on this!
