ABOUT THIS COURSE

German Language reviews the material typically taught in two to three semesters of college-level German. The course develops listening and reading skills, comprehension of vocabulary and grammar, and the ability to understand cultural and situational contexts.

This is a free, self-paced Modern States course with no prerequisites. It is aligned to the CLEP® German Language exam, which combines Level 1 and Level 2 content into a single test. The exam includes separately timed listening and reading sections. Most colleges that grant credit for CLEP® language exams award the equivalent of two or more semesters of credit, depending on your exam score.

Modern States originally developed this course in collaboration with Tania Hinderberger-Burton, Ph.D. of American University. Karl-Georg Federhofer supported course enhancements published in 2025.
